Winter 2009 MMOPA Magazine

The Winter 2009 issues features a summary of the 2009 Convention in Scottsdale – a distant next best thing to being there. Get comfortable with eAPIS (Electronic Advance Passenger Information System) by reading Jeff Schweitzer’s overview. This issues letter from Piper is from new Piper President and CEO Kevin Gould offering an update on the PiperJet and the state and challenges of the GA industry. Doug Leet provides the always sobering but enlightening synopsis’ of recent PA46 fleet NTSB accident reports. Its upgrades “buyer beware” in Travis Holland’s Views from a JetProp column. The new G1000 system in the Meridian is reviewed by Justin Lazzeri. Kevin Mead does his typical great job in over-viewing the Nose Steering system on the PA46. Review your weather system skills with Mary Bryant’s Issues and Answers quiz. And closing it out, our intrepid travel sherpa, Thierry Pouille, provides a great tutorial on Greenland and jumping the pond.

2009 MMOPA Convention a Big Success

November 2, 2009

By Tom Kieffer

The 2009 MMOPA Convention is now in the logbook and was a success by all measures. As testimony to the PA46 airframe's and community staying power this year's convention ignored the stumbling economy and exceeded attendance expectations. In spite of unseasonably cool Arizona temps (really folks it is usually 80 not 60 - sorry no refunds) a good time was had by all. New friends were made, safety was enhanced, relationships with vendor partners were furthered, and the organization continued to evolve in very positive fashion. Many first timers remarked at what a fantastic group we have the privilege of being part of.

As expected, there were many great training and safety presentations. Check the Resource section of the MMOPA website for copies of many of these sessions. Among the exceeded expectations was the attendance at the companion training flying sessions. Thanks to our fantastic instructor corps for taking good care of our loved ones (and our spouses too) and not making it seem too easy.

The leadership of our organization transitioned during the Members meeting held on Saturday. After four years of service Jim Yankaskas turned over the presidency to Jon Sisk - a long time MMOPA member and advocate who will serve us well. I and the rest of the board look forward to working with Jon in the years ahead.

Special thanks to Jim for carrying the mantle for two two-year terms. Doug Leet, Past President, transitioned off the board after many years of service. Jim and Doug leave a legacy of improved safety and a dramatically improved relationship with our primary partner, Piper. Outgoing BOD members are Doug Leet, Richard Geist, Don Lockard, and Randy James. New BOD members are Bart Bartlett, Eric Roehl, and Dick Rochfort. Current Director and Staff roster available here.

Plan on attending next year's 20th anniversary conference in beautiful Amelia Island FL.

20th Anniversary MMOPA Conference

October 27-30, 2010

Situated along 13 miles of pristine, picturesque Atlantic coastline, Amelia Island is the southernmost of the Sea Islands, a chain of barrier islands along the eastern U.S. seaboard.

Amelia Island, Florida, was once a vibrant Victorian village by the sea. Amelia Island also owns the unique distinction of being the only U.S. city to have once been under the domain of eight different nations, and is still known as the Isle of 8 Flags.

Today, Amelia Island is a seaside retreat for nature lovers and those who thrive on an abundance of sun, sand and outdoor sports. Visitors will also encounter a wealth of fine dining, and a variety of interesting shops and museums to browse as they stroll the cobblestone streets in the heart of historic Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Find yourself on Amelia Island, Florida - where Southern charm meets the sea and live oaks meet white sandy beaches. Southern hospitality at its finest is on display here at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. One of the most popular beach destinations on the East Coast, this luxurious barrier island hotel provides a welcome barrier between you and the world beyond.

Mark your calendars now - Oct 27-30, 2010.

<-- Summer 2009 MMOPA Magazine

This issue of MMOPA Magazine features a preview of the Annual Convention in Scottsdale AZ and all the resources and opportunities to explore in Arizona this October. One of our fleets top insurers, Tim Bonnell from PIM, provides a good primer on who is insured on your airplanes policy. Justin Lazzeri from Skytech continues with Part 2 of his overview of the Meridian and its capabilities. Kevin Mead discusses the common questions and troubleshooting tips regarding one of your airplanes most comforting annunciators – The Landing Gear lights. The recently newsworthy topic of Bird Strikes is covered in Mary Bryant’s Issues and Answers column. Air Journey’s Thierry Pauille offers a tutorial on flying to the Dominican Republic.
